With Halloween just around the corner, I’ve got a few materials to deliver up until the horror-fest begins. Like a lot of designers, a blank piece of paper (or screen) is scary (no pun intended) and great ideas don’t seem to flow well on some days. Well, I’m having one of those days, today.
To help me get out of my jam, I thought I’d take a look at some talented individuals in hopes of getting some inspiration.
Dracula is by far my favorite horror character. For a kid, someone who changes into a bat, sleeps during the day, and terrifies people with blood sucking fangs during the night, this is as good as it gets. If you were like me who grew up watching old vampire movies, you would recognize the dear Count as Bela Lugosi, the actor who played the original Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler made famous by Bram Stoker’s novel.
So for some of you who might be working on a couple of Halloween designs, check out some of these impressive illustrations and drawings that pay homage to my favorite character.
Sixo
I absolutely love the style and charm of Sixo’s rendition of Dracula. Check out his entire horror monster collection from his portfolio titled Halloween is coming
Daniel Dufford
This version of Vlad is one of my favorites on this list. The sombre green hues and the look on Vlad’s face fits the ominous mood of the festivities. More of Daniel here
Gregbo Watson
I love the colors and layout and how 1930s this Dracula poster looks. Awesome rendition by Gregbo
Alan Preciado
Alan’s illustration of the Count is addictive. I love the thick outlines and pastel skin color. This is the result of watching too many horror movies from the 50’s. Check out more of Alan’s stuff
Mohammad Azad
Â
Azad’s got some awesome processes from illustration to digital artwork. I like how this is drawn from the side. It really gives you the imagination of how sinister he looks from the front. Check out Azad’s entire process here
Rockopy Demente
I love seeing work processes from start to finish. This one by Rockcopy is absolutely awesome. The entire suit, smirk, iPhone and Batman utility belt makes this one of my favorite character rendition! See more of Dracool
Courtney Bass
Courtney’s got some really good technique on this piece. This detailed work of Mr. Lugosi is a combination of micron pen, amazing stipple work, and ink washing. Mad props. See more of Courtney’s work
Corina Plamada
Amazing character design from Corina. The octopus-like beard caught my attention first and can’t help but notice it’s Asian influence – rosy pink cheeks and samurai style wardrobe pattern. See more unique stuff
Daniel Jiménez Villalba
For most gamers, this next version of Draco should be more familiar. From the game Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow II, this concept from Daniel really brings forth what the demon child is all about. Amazing illustration! See more of Daniel’s work
Andres Reinoso
I love the amazingly resemblance to Bela Lugosi. Really digging the fine lifework, bulging eyeballs, and subtle shadow work over the face. Great character design by Andres
Drew Ragland
Another favorite of mine. This digital painting of Bela is absolutely stunning. Love the color combination of purple eyes and greenish – teal face. Check out more cool from Drew
Gabby Correia
Gabby did these amazing print ad illustrations for Tabard Mosquito repellant. I like she’s manage to capture 3 versions of Draco. Great monochrome work! See more here
Aurelio Lorenzo
I really hope this awesome sketch work from Aurelio will be made into a graphic novel some day. Really admiring the shading and color sequence. See more of Aurelio’s sketches
Will Jeffries
I love that Dracula’s got more up his sleeves than bats. Sweet rendition by Will – I appreciate that it isn’t done in the typical way. Great work!
Sapip Tenktai
I would love for this to go on sale! Sapip’s got an awesome concept with the bats flying in. Also loving the excellent shading and ink work. Great version of DRACULAAAAA
Jeff Busch
Another homage to Bela Lugosi, this time by Jeff Busch. I just love the intricate details and texture of the face and hair. Jeff’s got a series of portraits done up of the Halloween greats. Check it out here
Brian Huff
This list isn’t complete without a hipster version of Dracula! Kudos to Brian for illustrating one for us. There’s a small writeup about how this character came about on Mr. Huff’s behance
Tina Poe
I knew I had to feature the Soul Dracula by Tina when I saw it. At first I thought there wasn’t going to be anything underneath that cloak. Thanks for keeping it PG13, Tina. I’m digging the black Converse, too!
Vinicius Cavalcante Mendes
Another tribute to the great Bela Lugosi. I love this realistic rendition by Vinicius done entirely with color pencils. See more awesomeness here
Christopher Thornock
I love this version of Vampyr by Chris. The sinister look, the grainy texture, the fangs, the long sharp fingernails, even the skull logo is a trip!
Udi Kalmanovitz
This design concept of the Count is top notch! The hair texture alone is enough for some mad props. Great work from a talented designer. See more of Udi’s work
Martin Smith
This Dracula Book Cover is currently my desktop wallpaper. Martin’s attention to detail and symmetry is what makes this version of Draco so unique. Props on making the Count look smashing in a bow tie.
Summerise Kay
An amazing design with intricate drawings on this piece by Kay. I love how there’s a little story going on in between this artwork. This image is just a small part of a process piece which you should all check out here
Felipe Moreira
Impressive character design by Felipe who’s got all the right swag on for Dracula. I love the dark undertones and color palette that brings out the Halloween mood.
Ladislav Hubert
This is an awesome poster mix of Urban legends from Ladislav. The skin texture on Dracula’s face and his expression really sells this artwork. Great use of colors, too!
Ande Rummel
I can’t believe that this was done in Ande’s spare time. Great inking and brush technique all around. Check out more of Ande’s paintings
Ania Goszczy?ska
Another favorite rendition of the Count by Ania. The East meets West concept really works with this and I also love how he’s got his throat slit. Creepy stuff. See more here
Edson Medeiros
I’m a sucker for cartoony characters, and this version of Dracula definitely makes the cut! Edson’s got an entire Monsta Crew illustrated. Check it out!
Nicolas Ruggieri
I like this. Really. It’s our featured image. I’ve been seeing a lot of geometric stuff online lately, but this Blood Sucker gives it some effing attitude! Amazing style and color patterns from Nicolas.
Roberto Perez
I love how Roberto portrays the infamous demon doing what he does best to the women he loves. Great shading and inking done on this piece aptly titled Vampire Love
