The new edition is designed to meet dual-language requirements for French and English-speaking Canadian users.
With both English and French having official language status in Canada, it’s common to find everything from publications, product packaging and even Web sites made available in both languages. This is even more the case within government publishing departments, which must make a vast array of documents accessible in both French and English. Factor in both private sector and government design departments and shops that have a mix of employees that use one or the other as their first language, and the result is a situation that’s ripe for a publishing application that’s as bilingual as the country itself.
That’s in essence what Quark has come up with, in the form of its QuarkXPress 7 Canadian Edition. According to Richard Pasewark, Quark’s senior vice president of Sales (Americas), “Quark is responding to the requirements of Canadian customers, as well as the French language requirements of the Quebec government, by providing software that fully supports both French and English-speaking users.” The support comes via the ability to freely switch between user interfaces in French and English, using fully localized menus and windows. The new version also makes use of hyphenation and justification rules for French, U.S. English and International English, as well as providing bilingual spell-checking and full text authoring. Even the manuals are provided in both languages.
Customers purchasing the U.S. English version of QuarkXPress 7 between January 1, 2007 and September 30, 2007 can exchange their license to QuarkXPress 7 Canadian Edition at no charge when it becomes available, in the second quarter of 2007. It will be priced at $749 for a full license or $249 when upgrading. More information is available on the Quark site.
