Spam has been around for ever, since 1978 when the first email advertising messages were sent. Since then it has known a continuous increase over the years. It so widely used because it&#8217;s economically viable because advertisers have virtually no operating costs beyond the management of their mailing lists, and the fact it&#8217;s difficult to hold senders accountable for their mass mailings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cld_title\">WordPress Spam<\/p>\n<p>For a regular WordPress blog there are 2 large types of spam :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>comment spam<\/strong>, regarding comments posted as a response to a blog post. This also includes<strong> trackback spam<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>contact form spam<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"cld_title\">So what can I do ?<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately there are quite effective ways of eliminating spam from your WordPress blog. We will present below <strong>5 WordPress plugins : 3 for comment and trackback spam, and 2 for contact form spam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"cld_title\">Stop Comment and Trackback Spam<\/p>\n<p class=\"cld_subtitle\">Akismet, the first frontier<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Akismet\" href=\"http:\/\/akismet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;charset=utf-8,%3Csvg xmlns%3D'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg' viewBox%3D'0 0 1 1'%2F%3E\" data-src=\"https:\/\/crazyleafdesign.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/akismet1.jpg\" alt=\"Akismet\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you own a WordPress blog, you know what <strong>Akismet<\/strong> is. <a title=\"Akismet\" href=\"http:\/\/akismet.com\/\">Akismet<\/a>, or <strong>Automattic Kismet<\/strong>, is a spam filtering service created by <strong>Automattic<\/strong>, the corporation which employs most of the main developers of the weblog platform <strong>WordPress<\/strong>, and released on October 25, 2005. <strong>Akismet <\/strong>attempts to filter link spam from blog comments and spam TrackBack pings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Akismet <\/strong>comes already installed with every <strong>WordPress <\/strong>blog. All you have to do is activate it from your <strong>WordPress Admin page<\/strong>. For the plugin to work it requires an <strong>API key<\/strong> which can be obtained by <strong><a title=\"Register on WordPress.com\" href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.com\/signup\/\" target=\"_blank\">registering on WordPress.com<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The plugin stats are a testimony of it&#8217;s performance. At the time this article was written Akismet plugins from all the WordPress blog caught <strong>6,949,364,430 spam messages, and over 8 million today<\/strong>. On our blog has stopped since the last WordPress update <strong>over 24.000 spam comments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Download :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Download Akismet\" href=\"http:\/\/akismet.com\/download\/\">Download Akismet<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Usage : <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a title=\"Download Akismet\" href=\"http:\/\/akismet.com\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\">Download Akismet<\/a> or use the version included in your WordPress blog.<\/li>\n<li>Log in to your WordPress blog&#8217;s admin panel. Go to <strong>Plugins<\/strong> and activate <strong>Akismet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Signup to WordPress.com\" href=\"http:\/\/wordpress.com\/signup\/\" target=\"_blank\">Signup for an account on WordPress.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Get the API key<\/strong> from your WordPress.com account and go back to your WordPress admin panel. No way near as popular as <strong>Akismet<\/strong>, <strong>Defensio <\/strong>has the advantage of being available for a lot of blogging platforms like : <strong>WordPress<\/strong>, <strong>Text Pattern<\/strong>, <strong>Movable Type<\/strong>, <strong>PixelPost<\/strong>, <strong>Mephisto <\/strong>etc.<\/p>\n<p>It has a few advantages like :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spam quarantine sorted by spaminess<\/li>\n<li>OpenID support<\/li>\n<li>Background color applied to spam comments to increase ease-of-identification<\/li>\n<li>Spam comments collapsed (and restorable) to allow for easy and efficient navigation<\/li>\n<li>Performance statistics provided to show how Defensio is doing on your blog<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note : Only works for WordPress 2.1 or above.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Download :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Download Difensio\" href=\"http:\/\/defensio.com\/downloads\">Download Difensio<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Usage :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Deactivate Akismet and\/or any other anti-spam plugins by going to your <strong>Plugins <\/strong>tab in the <strong>WordPress control panel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Copy the &#8216;defensio-anti-spam&#8217; folder (unzipped from the file you downloaded) into &#8216;wp-content\/plugins\/&#8217;. You should now have a file called &#8216;defensio.php&#8217; in &#8216;wp-content\/plugins\/defensio-anti-spam\/&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Return to the <strong>Plugins <\/strong>tab in your control panel and <strong>activate Defensio<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Under the <strong>Plugins tab<\/strong>, you will find a new tab called <strong>Defensio Configuration<\/strong>. It\u2019s a submenu link on the <strong>Plugins page<\/strong>. Go the the \u2018<strong>Installation Status<\/strong>\u2019 area near the top and it will tell you if the plugin is installed correctly. If it tells you that the plugin is not installed correctly, please double-check what directory you have installed <strong>WP-SpamFree<\/strong> in, delete any <strong>WP-SpamFree<\/strong> files you have uploaded to your server, re-read the Installation Instructions, and start the Installation process over from step 1.
