Rockin’ Infographics about Music

Music is more than just something to be heard – the orchestration of words and sound is an attack to the senses. A well-written song can conjure images based on the listeners’ memories and even give you goose bumps. Precisely, the range of experiences derived from music through the years make such a beloved art form to people.

As music crosses beyond sonic landscapes and is transposed to different realms of experiences, below are infographics about music that represent the art not only as a statistic, but also as an enduring social and cultural legacy.

Last.fm, an online music streaming website based in the UK, has compiled data of the most listened artists of 2011. The infographic consists of line graphs and tells how musical and non-musical events correlate to the listening habits and preferences of users in the site. For instance, interest for Rebecca Black’s “Friday” was at an all-time high in the middle of March, which was a couple of days after the song’s release. Also, renewed interest in the work of Any Winehouse in August was caused by her death last July 23.

Jason Killingham designed an infographic in tribute to his favorite “Philadelphia weirdo music”, as he would refer to them. The comprehensive information about these obscure Philly artists inside each bubble gives you a gist of their music. However, it is the quirky design that gets the attention here, comprised of the striking use of color and hard-drawn images.

Pink Floyd is a masterful band that has produced classics during its seminal run in the ‘70s. However, the band will be best remembered as the artists responsible for The Dark Side of the Moon, an iconic album that defied and redefined an era. Andrew Baumgarter created an infographic in tribute of The Dark Side – taking in the rainbow colors and the ubiquitous triangle on the album cover – and compared its legacy as one of longest top-charting albums in Billboard history to other long-lasting achievements.

The infographic spans 50 years of the chart-topping albums from the most influential artists recognized in the UK. Its aim is to educate the youth about the classics, which is why the infographic can be viewed outside Soniq Radio at Shelton Youth Centre.

The cover albums on white background are used as design on the greater part of the wall design. However, more compelling data such as Top Ten Bestselling Singles Worldwide, Fastest Selling Albums in the UK, and others, accompanied with even better design theme, can be found below it.

Music Infographics - Rock N Roll Metro Map

Listening to music is like a long, arduous journey towards your path to discovering oneself, which serves as your destination. Not to get philosophical here, but the Rock N’ Roll Metro Map pretty much describes what I mean in a less metaphysical but equally convoluted way. The infographic mimics the look of a transit map, with each line representing a particular genre and each station symbolizes an artist or group spawning from their genre.

What makes this infographic all the more interesting is how the structure of a transit map best captures how some artists cross over to different genres. Bands like Greenday, who has treaded the fine line between pop/rock and punk throughout the years, and Aerosmith, whose brand of hard rock can easily be classified as heavy metal, serve as intersecting points of the two lines in the map. Casual listeners who have enjoyed the same “line” all their life may way to transfer to another line starting off that common station and explore other artists from a different genre to broaden their musical tastes.

Conclusion

What the featured infographics above show glimpses of what music has been and could be in the near future. Music cannot be fully contained in an infographic; its rich history has not only produced different artists and genres that will take a lifetime to cover in its entirety, but has also undergone changes in how it is consumed by the public. The digital age has ushered an exciting time in music where artists have more avenues to express their artistry while listeners can enjoy the songs of their favorite bands through the Internet and their portable music players.

Just as music is undergoing an ever-constant change, we also get to view music more than just an aural experience, but also as a visual treat, thanks to the creation of these infographics.
