Are you a design whore?
As we all know there are dozens of aspects to modern graphic design, ranging from solid text page layout to complex vector illustration, with side excursions along the way into logo development, CSS coding and prepress for offset print.
The fact is that nobody – with a capital Nob – knows it all.
So it stands to reason that there are specialists in every aspect of design; photographic enhancers, CSS designers, large poster designers, print advertising gurus etc. If you go into any large agency, it will have specialist illustrators on staff, and mere ‘designers’ won’t ever be tasked with creating complex illustrations. They will also have a Photoshop compositor or two who can put the head of an eagle seamlessly onto the body of a supermodel. And there’ll be a whole battalion of experts in typography, page layout, copywriting and other areas, every one keen to do their best for the company. (What they most likely will not have is a prepress expert, but then problems with prepress will be sorted at the specialist prepress house, and the extra cost will be swallowed by the huge budget.)
But as clients economize by taking their design work away from the large, inner-city agencies to seek out smaller (less expensive) alternatives in the suburbs ( yay!) their expectations won’t have changed. Which means they’ll be looking for specialists in each of the dark arts of design –without actually knowing it. To them a designer is a designer. All they really want is the same service and the same results they’ve enjoyed in the past, but for less cost.

The PSD TO XHTML Contest Winner
Last Tuesday we launched the “Free PSD to XHTML Slicing” contest. The contest has ended today October 14 @ 02:00 CET and it’s time to announce the winner.
We had 33 participants for the contest. Each participated by posting a comment on the contest article. We assigned a number from 1 to 33 to each comment. Using Random.org list generator we generated the winner. The winning comment ID was 23.
The winner of the Free PSD to XHTML contest is Marco (www.marcofolio.net).
We would like to thank everyone for participating and we are sorry we couldn’t provide more prizes but be sure the future contest will have more and bigger prizes.
CLD Tutorials Relaunch
In a continuous quest to improve the services we offer to our readers, not only this blog’s, but all users that use our services, we have relaunched CLD Tutorials.
For those who aren’t familiar with the website, CLD Tutorials is a selection of the best tutorials available ob the web, regarding these topics : Corel Painter, CoreDRAW, Fireworks, Flash, Gimp, Illustrator, InDesign, Paint ShopPro, QuarkXPress, ASP, ColdFusion, CSS, Dreamweaver, HTML, Javascript, MySQL, PHP and Ruby on Rails.
CLD Tutorials now uses a modified version of the ZinePress Theme by Andrew Lindstrom. This theme will be available free for download in a future post.
The new layout is more user oriented, each tutorial having to the left of the summary its own preview. Also there is a top-notch community news option for users to submit their news / tutorials. The “Add news form” is available from any page of the website, in the footer area. There’s also a RSS feed for the Community News you can easily subscribe to.
In order to add as much useful information for our users we added a RSS feed importer in the sidebar. This RSS importer imports the last 10 design resources submitted on zaBox.
The blog will feature a new tutorial every 2 days.
